Spring has sprung here in NYC! the warm weather has inspired me to go into conversation about our last summer collection, PHASE 6: LOST, and also talk about how it has informed the design for our upcoming collection launch.
Summer feels like the best time of the year for experimental jewelry design. For the brand Austin James Smith, I am always trying to bring something new to the table and think outside the box from past collections I've created. Last summer i became very attracted to the wide use of different types of materials, shapes, and colors being used in jewelry. I wanted to create a collection that highlighted the playful use of jewelry for the warmer months.
Using bold, bright color enamels the phase 6: LOST collection was born. The collection was inspired by motifs of the ocean and pirate treasure. Classic nautical colors were utilized such as sea-foam green and red and classic pirate red and white for a campy scurvy vibe, while paying homage to the sharper design elements often utilized in Austin James Smith collections. Pieces such as a pooka shell necklace were re-imagined into metal with teeth like waves. Summer means less clothes, and louder accessories!
my latest collection, Phase 7: UTOPIA featured sleeker toned down design, which feels more appropriate during frigid winter months where were often layering more with clothing as apposed to jewelry. I think both energies of experimental, and toned down and sleek are equally valid, and I pride myself on the brand offering a wide range of versatile styles and aesthetics.
As i look forward to the new summer collection, i am excited to play with experimental bold design choices that truly shine under the blistering bright sun. I cant wait to share with you all what weve been working on!
